Looking to settle into your new home? We've compiled a list of top tips that can help you transition smoothly. You'll be loving life in no time.
After you move into your new home, change the locks on all the outside doors immediately. If you're renting, check with your landlord/property manager first. Although it may seem like an inconvenient task, changing the locks is important in ensuring the safety of your home; there could be keys floating around that you don't even know about - especially if the property was previously rented. In addition to changing the locks, also test that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly, and make sure there is a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location. Lastly, familiarize yourself with where the circuit breaker and water shut-off valve are located so that you can act quickly in an emergency situation.
There's no need to unpack all of your belongings in one day. Get the bedroom furniture set up first so that you have a place to sleep comfortably at night. If you're moving with young children, help them unpack some of their favorite toys or books to keep them company while you work on setting up the new house.
tackle the kitchen next! You will need to unpack some items for morning essentials such as napkins, a frying pan, coffee maker, plates and mugs. The rest can stay in boxes.
After you finish unpacking your essentials, move on to the bathrooms. Unpack your toiletries, bathroom mats and shower curtain. Put some fresh towels out so you're all set for your first day in your new home. And as always, clean up as you go to avoid waking up to mountains of trash the next morning.
If you're like me, you won't be able to sleep in your new home until you've cleaned it from top to bottom. Make sure you have all the supplies you need on hand - a multi-surface cleaner, mop, toilet brush, and disinfectant wipes - so that you can get started as soon as possible.
Before unpacking, clean your bedroom, kitchen and bathroom first. Once you've arranged all of your furniture and put away your belongings, it becomes more challenging to reach all the nooks and crannies for a proper cleaning.
To keep everything organized, put all your documents, receipts and bills related to the move in a folder. You might need them when you do your taxes next. If you haven't already gone to the post office to change your address, do it as soon as possible. And make sure that everyone who needs it – like your bank and insurance company - has your new address too. Also, don't forget to register with a local pediatrician if you have young children so that their medical records can be transferred over. Lastly, find out if you need to update your driver's license for the move.
Children and pets have a particularly difficult time with moving, so it's important to get back into your regular routine as soon as possible. If there are certain things your children enjoy each week, like movie night on Friday, don't skip them. Registering your children for their new school quickly will give them something positive to look forward to every morning.
